Kopano Core Install Fails on Ubuntu 16.10 Due to Dependencies

You appear to be taking inferences where clearly there isn’t one. You keep changing your mind about what you are after. You apppear to want everything for nothing. I suspect Kopano won’t be too upset if you go elsewhere!

I’m looking for the product to work, so you are saying that that is a rude thing to expect? I changed nothing, I’ve been crystal clear what I am after. And the only responses in this community are either “switch to a different OS… oh and that one doesn’t work either, so switch back” or “pay up, this product doesn’t work unless you pay.”
Message received, totally clear. This is an intentionally broken open source product to pressure people into paying for installation support. Got it. No more needs to be said.

Thank you for thoroughly proving my point! :-)

We certainly want proper support, which is why I’m looking at CentOS 7 and Ubuntu 16.10.
But 16.10 is no long term support version, thats why I would not classify systems using it as “proper support”.
Ubuntu doesn’t offer any long term support version, only versions with that name. The current version is the only fully supported version. If you use Ubuntu, you give up the long term support mindset of RHEL and SLES, it’s just part of being in that ecosystem.

Ubuntu 16.10 is the only currently, fully supported version of Ubuntu (LTS is not full support nor current) and we are getting these errors:
I don’t get what you are trying to say. Ubuntu 16.10 is for us no officially supported distribution. You can find officially supported distributions at https://documentation.kopano.io/support_lifecycle_policy/linux_support_lifecycle.html#linux-distributions-support-in-general
But the officially supported ones didn’t work. We turned to Ubuntu when the CentOS install failed. We are very aware of the support matrix and tried to follow it. No one has had ANY input on that thread:
https://forum.kopano.io/topic/47/kopano-core-install-fails-on-centos-7-due-to-missing-package
Everyone is quick to try to push for support payments, or to berate me for attempting to find a work around. But no one is actually willing to help. Patrick made it clear… Kopano is “pay up or get out.”
-
And yet again! I didn’t say that. I said for professional enterprise support you obviously need to pay - name me one comany that provide pro enterprise support for free?! (i.e. instantly telephone support, remote access support etc). You can’t expect instant answers for free. You posted about two hours ago - give people a chance to respond! It’s Community forum - most people are probably at work at this hour.
You said you wanted enterprise support - then you said you didn’t. And now you are again damanding instant answers to a problem you are having! You might have more luck if you stop trying to put words into people’s mouths, trying to shove your unusual opinion of what ‘supported’ means into everyone else and generally barging in like a bull in a china shop damanding people instantly help you for free!
In another genuine attempt to help you, if you want actual pro enterprise support and tested binaries (among other things like offical repository support etc), these are available for a fee. The free community edition is the latest code with the latest features and as a result sometimes there are bugs. The free community edition is used by many people and when they have problems, they politely post in here or the Zarafa forum and they get helped. Not always instantly and not always fully successful on the first try - there is no reason to expect that. Most people have no problems with it and it works as expected.
Please stop trying to tell everyone that because you are unable to get it to work it must mean it doesn’t work for anyone ever! If you can’t get any of the distributions working then it likely something you are doing, not a problem with the software.
In the end though, maybe Kopano isn’t what you are after. If that is the case, there is no need to be insulting about it. If you just tell everyone it is rubbish or not ready, don’t be too surprised if you don’t get instantly helped.

Indeed I am a Kopano community user and I have always been happy.
I do my best to help the community and Kopano in the (rare) occasions I find bugs I have found both Kopano and the community always extremely helpful and I have today no reported issues.

I didn’t ask for support, I want a supported OS. Meaning an OS that Kopano has a working install for (that is an enterprise product.) Instead of being helpful and pointing to how Kopano can be installed, you just keep pushing for me to pay for support for something that doesn’t even install.

And in two hours there have been plenty of unhelpful responses about how I’m so wrong to not be paying for support, how I’m using the wrong OS or whatever and zero responses of someone actually interested in fixing the installation issues. I had no expectation of a fast response, but I got them. They were just unhelpful and unfriendly. Telling me to use “a different OS” no matter what I choose, is not someone helping. Arguing that if I want a solid OS to install on that I’d better pay is just rude. If you have nothing helpful or nice to say, why keep posting? You aren’t helping me, nor are you making the community look good.
Telling people to pay up if they want help when I’m just looking for the most casual community support I would get from any other community, including other communities about Kopano, is a bit ridiculous and tells me loads about how little you think of the product. You’ve made your opinion clear and are making me feel that it was really good that we tested out the community.
Other communities had more discussion about Kopano than it appears Kopano has had ever. Asking the Kopano community to be the top community for Kopano issues, I am shocked, was too much of an expectation as well.
-
I’m very sure that you are the only person who thinks I’m pushing you into buying support. I’m merely telling you that it is available and pointing out that if you want instant answers, you can’t expect that from a community forum. If you are polite, no doubt when people have a chance, they will look into your problem and help you.

To be fair, if you look through the community history, there is essentially no activity. We’ve had so many more posts on ML about Kopano today and in this thread today than Kopano has ever had before. If you look through the threads for support, there isn’t much good or bad, there just isn’t much there.

I think your behaviour as set out in my previous post fully explains the treatment you have received here. And yet again you are putting words into my mouth. You are deluding nobody but yourself. And I bet that no forum will give you instant answers especially if you are as rude there are you are in here. I note that you are being equally rude and disingenuous elsewhere and surprise surprise you didn’t make any progress there either!!
-
Trust me, when I needed help, I got it either from the zarafa (now kopano) forums or from zarafa/kopano directly. They have been the most helpful people I ever had to deal with.
I think you should tone down your attitude a little and perhaps you will see people actually helping you.
If you go around telling everyone off, the least you will find is someone who is interested or actually wanting to spend their precious time to help you.

I’m sorry if my attitude comes across incorrectly. I thought that I asked very simple questions and only expected some helpful guidance. If you look at my questions, my key questions were…
- I tried CentOS as the docs suggest, the install doesn’t work (no one has responded about this.)
- I then tried Ubuntu 16.10 (current, supported by Canonical) and it didn’t work. Wasn’t expecting them too, was just hopeful that Ubuntu was supported but not mentioned (16.04 wasn’t in the docs till this morning, by the way) - so I posted about that too… but the response was just that I should be on CentOS 7… which we already knew didn’t work.
- I posted about needing help finding the distro that would work and would meet standard production criteria.
- I posted about an Ubuntu 16.04 issue, and that was corrected. But we won’t run that in production, so that was just us being helpful.
I tried posting for normal assistance but kept getting a run around, told to do something else ignoring that those things didn’t work or suggestions that I should be paying if I wanted things to work. How would it be expected that my responses should sound? Not one actually helpful thing has been recommended yet that I’ve seen. I understand that that might take some time, but I didn’t ask it to be any faster.

Just to be clear, I have found the responses to be 100% helpful, just not in the way that Kopano would want. The only reason that I took the time to post here was at your request to test out the quality of the community and its responses. That was far more important at this stage than getting a working install up and running (which we have, just not on an OS we are comfortable with.)

I apologize if I put words in your mouth. Your initial response that if I wanted a supported OS that I needed to pay for it sounded like you thought that I should be paying if I wanted to use a production ready OS. I still don’t know what else you meant, but maybe I jump to the conclusion.
I actually made great progress where you are thinking I did. We were evaluating the product and the evaluation process worked perfectly. You will note that we have and have had Kopano up and running, that was never the issue. I never said that that was a problem.
I think you are confusing the goals. The goal was not to “get it running” but to evaluate the product. And it was extremely successful and my team has confirmed this. You have actually been quite helpful.

But why did you feel that I needed instant answers? Did I say something to make you feel that way? I just posted here with the information about what we needed for our evaluation and the issues we had with different tests. I don’t think that I posted anything to imply that it was time sensitive or that I had some expectation of speed. If I did, I’m sorry, that was not my intent.
We work odd hours and did not plan to post in the community until we were requested to do so. So we had several saved up issues to report, perhaps posting them all at once gave that appearance? I did not mean to.

@scottalanmiller your first bump to https://forum.kopano.io/topic/47/kopano-core-install-fails-on-centos-7-due-to-missing-package surely felt like you expected some form of sla for replies.

That bump was after this point, quite a bit after - an hour and a half after, in fact. That bump was specifically because I was being berated in this thread and the other one asking about OS releases and people were ignoring the CentOS thread which explained those two and made the posts that I was getting here feel rude (like telling me to use something from the support matrix - when the thing from the support matrix had failed.) The bump was my response to what I felt was people being rude and trying to push me to pony up to be in this community (or to run a solid OS).
Does that help to explain my frustration? I was not the one injecting the feeling of urgency.
-
The issue that I have is that there seems to be a lot of urgency to jump on telling me that I’m wrong to want an enterprise OS, that I’m wrong to have tested one thing when another didn’t work, that I’m wrong in posting elsewhere, that I’m being too urgent - in reality, the message from this community feels like they are saying that we were wrong to try to evaluate Kopano for production use, I don’t know how else to take it. Everyone is happy to post that stuff. But nothing helpful posted (until you posted just a bit ago about clarification on the CentOS thread) for several hours. Yet lots of posts telling me that I’m wrong or rude for even asking for such a thing or that I should consider paying someone.
I was totally polite and professional and without urgency in my initial posts. I’ve already given the product a lot of effort and have a working install. No one asked about that, only wanted to point out where I was wrong for looking at this with an operational mindset (which alone answers the core questions that we were evaluating for. ) I never intended to come off as rude or impatient. Please read my posts, in order, and in context and I think that you will see that I was not being rude nor impatient in any way.
