ubuntu 18.04 apt install kopano-core

Hi;

I have NOT installed any custom repos / apt sources and have installed kopano using:

apt install kopano-core kopano-server

On a fresh 18.04 Ubuntu install.

My question is, is this the community edition ?? - I have not been prompted for any license subscription keys and everything appears to be working.

Hi @crankshaft,

there is no “community edition” of Kopano. Kopano has been packaged downstream starting with Ubuntu 17.10 and Debian 10. From what I’ve heard these packages are not 100% functional, and given distribution policies of course also quite out of date.

The packages available in the Ubuntu 18.04 repositories are based on Kopano 8.5.5 (and we are currently at 8.7.5). Assuming you want the best experience I would recommend getting the packages from our download server instead - or configure repositories if you have a valid subscription.

In any case, do not mix packages from Ubuntu with our packages as you’ll run into issues - if you decide to switch please remove these first before installing the Kopano provided versions.

@bhuisman - thanks, but:

There appears to be no files available for download due to a recent hack of one of the servers.
So do I need to purchases a subscription for 8.5.5 installed via this method, I am only a small user of 4 and don’t require paid support ?!

I have downloaded “demo-Ubuntu_18.04-2018-07-06” but is this “demo” version time limited or crippled in any way, does it require a subscription to run it ?

Sorry, but this does not appear to be made clear in the pages / documentation that I have seen :-)

@crankshaft yes, but of course we are working on getting the nightly releases available again. But this takes some time of course.

At this moment the options are to wait, get a trial key from kopano.com and use the supported packages or get a paid subscription indeed.

@bhuisman - Thanks, we have been using zarafa for probably 10 years, my recent upgrade attempt from zarafa 7.1 to 7.2 failed and hence this fresh install of kopano.

And of course I am unable to use my zarafa perpetual license key for kopano, and are rather reluctant to have to purchase a subscription / license a second time since we are very small users (4 users) and don’t really need all of the latest bells & whistles, just mailboxes & public folders.

Our software is completely open source and does not require a subscription or license key to run or the enable certain features (apart from e.g. support and our package repositories). This is also the reason why you cannot find documentations about limitations in the demo, there aren’t any ;-)

Please also have in mind that someone needs to finance further development and running, maintaining and responding in such places as a forum. Just because you once purchased a product does not mean that you can automatically expect to benefit from all further maintenance and development eternally. If you take a look at the website you will also find that its quite reasonable priced.

I’d argue you spent only a fraction of the money that goes into powering your kopano server for the actual subscription.
