Core packages in Ubuntu 20.04
-
Hello everyone,
I am using kopano at home for several years including a long time with zarafa and I am very satisfied. It is working most of the time without any problems.
I was delighted to see that there are now the core and webapp packages intregrated in Ubuntu 20.04 and Debian as well. Now I am curious:
-
Are these packages mainly the packages from your official repository which customers get when they buy the product? Does that mean that these Ubuntu integrated packages are the official stable versions?
-
Are there plans that the Ubuntu packages are updated regularly? Is the update-cycle mainly the same as on your own repository? Or is it just updated from time to time when there are capacities for that or are even done by community users?
So I considering change from nightly build to ubuntu package sources to have an easier, automated update process.
Thanks for your support :)

Hi @patrickb1991,
we at Kopano are not directly affiliated with the packages that are provided by Debian/Ubuntu.

No. These packages are built based on our open sourced code, but use different package layout. While Debian Testing is in development the downstream maintainers pick a certain already released version and any Debian specific patches the downstream maintainers considered necessary.

That is more a question for the downstream package maintainers, but knowing the update policies of Debian/Ubuntu anything but a simple bugfix release is unlikely during the lifetime of a release.

If you want to support us consider buying a subscription. It does not cost the world and gives you direct access to our support and package repositories with both our regular releases and the new Kopano One long term support release. https://kopano.com/pricing/groupware/

Hi @fbartels,
thanks for the answer. That makes it a lot clearer to me, that the integration is independend of the official kopano development team and releases.I have thought a lot about bying a subscription but unfortunately there are some things which makes it a difficult decision:
-
I am only one user in person - me -, nevertheless I use ~5 kopano-user for having some seperated postboxes for different e-mail addresses. In an official subscription to make my scenario work, I would need to buy 5 users - wouldn’t I? The license is per kopano-user and not per natural person - right?
-
15€ per User (if it is per person) per year is definitively a very good price and I would love to pay it to get a tested package repository without the hassle to use nightlybuilds.
-
In contrast - 150€ per year (as I see that I would need to buy at least 10 users on the link) would mean 12.50€ per month for just me. For about 8€ per month, I would get a hosted MS Exchange Account, which would also do the job - even natively with outlook-support. Of course my 5 postbox scenario would not work there. Even 5 users - 75€ per year would be to much for just my hobby.
I don’t want to sound unappreciative - you guys are making a great job. And as I am software-devoper myself I know that software development is expensive. But as it is just a hobby for me, having a private e-mail server, 150€ wouldn’t be worth for my needs.
If there are other means - e.g. a subscription just for the repositories and a “home use only” dependency for ~10 users, without any support or garantuee for lets say up to 30€ a year, I would grately consider buying a license.
But of course - there is no such thing as a free lunch. If I want comfort and tested repositories - I have to pay for it.
Thanks again for your support :)

I’m in the same boat. Hoping some cheaper/minimal support option comes along. I have 3 people in my family I’d like to use the software for.

Hello everybody,
same here, I only need two users at the moment for private use only. I considered to by a subscription, 15€ / user would be ok for me. I also hope, that a minimal support option will come.Regards,

Same boat here… I’m using openSUSE and I’d consider paying but for just myself the smallest package is too expensive.

Hello everyone,
to this I’d like to add as I’m in the same position as the others here.
Started with Zarafa quite some years ago, then Kopano and am still stoked about it. Also very happy especially with DeskApp which I personally prefer over Outlook.Would love to buy a subscription for me only but similar as the OP, I’m reluctant to buy 10 of them as I probably would never use them.

This I’d support, even with less users and/or not all components.

Out of curiosity. How many users would be enough for this kind of “private use” subscription. Three? Four? More?

@fbartels
I also started with Zarafa and have been using the software for a long time, especially because of z-push, so that I can keep all of my devices in sync, and the nice web client. openSUSE was providing packages but the maintainers of those packages have recently departed. My main concern is that I’d like to be able to get access to released packages (ideally for openSUSE Leap) instead of nightlies so that I am can use tested/released software which is presumably stable. Otherwise, I’ll likely have to move to another solution.I, personally, only have 1-2 users (myself and another user) and would be fine paying, say, $30 to $60 per year total.
Best,
Matt

I’d be happy to have a single user. However I’d also think a baseline + per-user cost could make sense as requirements are different … guess some may have their whole family on Kopano, for me its just me.
