welcome to Kopano! I’d say set up Kopano for yourself and see what you like to change yourself. With css skills a good first project could be to create a custom theme for WebApp.

Since there are only few outside code contributors there are no “beginner” tasks in our ticketing system, but you’ll be able to find bug/feature tickets at http://jira.kopano.io (an account can be created, but not be used to comment or create new tickets), all source code is location at https://stash.kopano.io.

the community site always only offers the latest version, so if you really want to go through 8.4, the the only option is to compile it yourself.

The good news is though that you don’t have to. You can also upgrade to 7.2 (link posted above) and the the latest Kopano.
